Preston-Johnston family papers, 1755-1962 1825-1962.

These papers reflect the personal and professional lives of several generations of the Preston-Johnston family of Kentucky. The variety of material includes the will of U.S. Congressman Benjamin Howard, church records from the Second Presbyterian Church of St. Louis, diaries of Presbyterian minister William Potts, Margaret Preston Johnston and Sarah Brant McDowell Preston, letters by James McDowell written while he served in Congress, Civil War letters by Dr. Eugene Johnston (surgeon, U.S. Army) describing conditions in Chattanooga, Tn. and the papers of Civil War major, Lexington attorney and Kentucky Adjutant General, Philip Preston Johnston. Diaries by Marius E. Johnston chronicle trips he made to the Arctic and Africa in 1910. World War II American field serviceman R.W.P. Johnston's diaries record the African Campaigns of 1941 and 1942.
